The Himalayas- Unraveling travel enthusiasts with beauty worth your while

“After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb”. ~~~Nelson Mandela

As the quote suggests, you would find reasons one after the other to visit again, if you happen to plan your first trip to the Himalayas. A magnificent and splendid mountain range in Asia, from Kashmir in the west to Myanmar in the east, having India, Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan in the middle, the Himalayas greet visitors with majestic experiences in the name of the world’s highest mountains including Everest, K2, Kanchenjunga and Nanda Devi.

A holiday at such a multi faceted land offers true visual treat. The picturesque landscapes and scenic beauty coupled with religious shrines and ancient monuments calls for a well awaited break from the daily schedule. The Himalayas are a trekker’s paradise offering a few of the most awe-inspiring places and routes on earth. To mention here, the Himalaya is a Sanskrit word for “abode of snow”.

Abundant beauty, rich culture and ancient temples

Being an enthralling and alluring destination, the Himalayas have earned accolades from across the globe as the highest mountain range in the world. They are an epic blend of diversity ranging from pine forests and vibrant rivers to natural hot springs.

Also, bagging the tag of a spiritual ground, the land holds within both, Hinduism and Buddhism, representing the sheer supremacy and splendor that nature can bestow.

My Experience says it ALL!!

These fore-mentioned factors attracted me and four of my friends to take a trip to this wonderland. And guess what!! In the foothills of the Himalayas, I found extreme tranquility in fun-loving Amritsar. It is the spiritual and cultural centre of the Sikh religion. It boasts of being a home to one of the most stunning and incredible attractions nationwide, the Golden Temple.

Declared as the summer capital of the British Raj, Shimla also absorbs ample of tourists as it gives you a taste of warm climate and Victorian architecture. If you are one of those metro-based visitors who look forward to recreational activities, then Ananda is the place for you in the Himalayas. It offers ultimate rejuvenation of mind, body and soul.

To the eastern part of the much acclaimed Himalayas, Darjeeling is as prominent for its tea as its Heritage miniature steam train.

Adventure that I found most invigorating

However, the most enticing experience I had was in Rishikesh. We had taken the 26 kms. package that covers most of the rapids. I, personally looked forward to doing the Wall, but then it was a wise decision not to do it as it was on the 36 kms stretch and was not recommended since the current was truly strong that day. After taking basic guidelines on safety and norms, we took off. And not to miss to mention, rafting was undoubtedly the most unforgettable part of the trip. The guide we hired was immensely helpful and kind. It was of course an add-on!

After the lifetime experience of rafting, we returned to the camp to find a sumptuous dinner for us. We all had planned to go for a trek after this, but everybody stepped back and wanted to have a good time playing beach volleyball. So, we had a great session of volleyball followed by another session of Bonfire.

Now, being a visitor to Rishikesh, I can suggest a few tips to remember while planning for a trip to the amazing land;

  • Since most of the camps do not offer electricity, keep with you, spare batteries.
  • Since most of the camps have no assured security and can’t be locked, do not carry valuables.
  • To avoid paying too much price or the last minute hassle, reserve your camp early.
  • Also, rest assured of the location of the camp.
  • Carry sunglasses, sun-block, dry fit tshits and shorts. A good pair of sandals is also a must.
  • In Rishikesh, have lunch at Chotiwala, there are two of them at the Laxman Jhula serving delectable food par excellence.
  • The temples at the ghats are also inspiring and give you divine experience. Beware of monkeys!

Come; fall in love with nature…

The overall trip was very rejuvenating and interesting; especially to feel the thrills of rafting in Rishikesh was something unbeatable. There is no doubt to the notion that ‘once you visit this out of the world land, you keep turning back time and again’. Same happened with me! I got such warm hospitality and an array of untouched natural experiences that whenever I get an opportunity for a weekend getaway, I don’t have to think twice to choose my holiday destination. I just browse through the packages to the Himalayas and pick the best one…
